1. Back This Way (Quill -SOCAN) Hear It Now!

I've been a few times around the sun,
Here again, not brave and young
As I was back then
Miles ago.

The bridges I burned, the scorn I earned,
The lies I told, the stories I heard
Don't mean much now,
Not so you'd know.

I never thought I'd be back this way again,
Sure, I was lost and gone,
Never thought I'd see this day again,
I never thought I'd hear this song.

Big gold moon warms the night,
Our troubles faded with the light,
Your loving smile is all I see.

No secrets now, no shame to hide,
No wiser, still with open eyes
We will get through,
You and me.

I never thought I'd be back this way again,
Sure, I was lost and gone,
Never thought I'd see this day again,
I never thought I'd hear this song.

2. Clever Lines (Quill - SOCAN) Hear It Now!

Hello again,
It's just a note to say you seem so far away
And now and then I think of going home for a while,
Making you smile,
Making the miles
Disappear…

First light,
The morning's cold without you, and through the night
I thought I felt you with me, almost here by my side,
Whispers and sighs
Closing our eyes,
Almost here…

There are times when clever lines can't say
I simply wish I'd stayed
The sadness turns me round
And I'm almost homeward bound.

A dirty rain,
I look around and can't remember why I came,
I only hope you think of me whenever you see
The sun breaking free,
Wings on the sea,
That's me…

There are times when clever lines can't say
I simply wish I'd stayed
The sadness turns me round
And I'm almost homeward bound.

3. The Killing Heart (Quill/Tolhurst - SOCAN/ASCAP) Hear It Now!

Why all the heavy breathing?
Why the silence and fear?
Who's in the cellar creeping?
Tell me what just happened here.

Is that a crack in the window?
Who put a hole in the wall?
Who let the fire cool to cinders?
What has frightened you all?

I find comfort on the edges of danger
Strength and compassion in a hand in the dark
I've relied on the kindness of strangers
They never see the killing heart.

Is someone there behind the door?
Who turned down the light?
Is that blood right there on the floor?
Something here is wound too tight.

I know what you are thinking
These things are hard for me to say
My heart is cold, my heart is sinking
Please don't look at me that way.

I find comfort on the edges of danger
Strength and compassion in a hand in the dark
I've relied on the kindness of strangers
They never see the killing heart.
Don't rely on the kindness of strangers
They never see the killing heart.

4. The Game (Quill/Tolhurst - SOCAN/ASCAP) Hear It Now!

I made it into Paradise one God forsaken day,
I walked the main street up and down looking for a game.
My streak was not what you'd call hot, my time was overdue,
With a lucky bone around my neck and roll inside my shoe.

In back of Monroe's General Store that hot, dry afternoon
The shades were drawn and a bare light burned in the middle of the room.
The dealer's name was Joker Jones, he wore a diamond in his smile,
In his hand held the whole damn pot and a winsome blue-eyed child.

By nightfall two had left the game, by 10 there was no doubt
That me and Joker Jones alone would see the whole night out.
From midnight on his smile was gone, his hands were shaking bad.
Come morning he was beaten, I'd won everything he had.

The Joker looked her up and down in the shadows by the door,
Then he looked at me and nodded, and he looked down at the floor.
To my surprise, tears filled his eyes, he almost went to speak,
But he did not say a word, he just walked out to the street.

She crossed the room without looking back, without a sweet Goddamn,
She only smiled that crazy smile, she never showed her hand.
In the days that followed Paradise, I thought I had it all,
But the summer flew and my luck did too, and I lost her in the fall.

Now, Paradise ain't a friendly place, they ought to change the name,
And I'm nothing but a hustler who understands the game.
But there's another game in Paradise, I'd give a pocketful of gold
To understand just who got hustled, who was bought and who was sold.

5. Always To The Light (Quill/Tolhurst - SOCAN/ASCAP) Hear It Now!
(For Molly, Daisy and Gracie)

Ravens cross the sun now,
My long run is done now,
Help me reach the river and some shade.
Riders on the skyline,
I do believe it's my time,
Not one more mile left in the day.
And as weary as I am,
I can't forget how it all began,
Home is where they know me,
Only they can show me the way.

The world will keep on turning,
Your fire's always burning,
The memories we hold will never fade,
And as I dream of falling,
It's your heart I hear calling,
And all my troubles slip away.
Stay with me through one more night,
Walk with me, always to the light,
Home is where they know me,
Only they can show me the way.

The days close in behind me,
The night might bring the rain,
I know they'll never find me here
In the dark I'll make my getaway

Stay with me through one more night,
Walk with me always to the light,
Home is where they know me,
Only they can show me the way.

7. A Tale Too Plain (Quill/Tolhurst - SOCAN/ASCAP) Hear It Now!

Time's unwound, cold sun rolls down the edges of the day
Too late now to turn around, could be I've lost my way.
Black wind, black night freeze out the light, earth and sky the same,
Too late now to turn around, go back the way we came.

The years we carry, the times we share are the only things we own
And all I find here of myself are these boot heels in the snow,
There's no wisdom in this ending, we did all we said we would,
Truth is just a tale too plain to be misunderstood.

I miss the wide, wild days of summer, silver light and air,
Blue on blue horizons and sun gold in our hair.
I'm a stranger in this cold embrace, I'm tired remembering,
This road will lead us nowhere, and hard time is closing in.

One day I'll call your name, or you'll call mine,
And there will be no answer, not this time,
No sorrow, smiles, no words to share, nothing there to hold,
And that will be the hardest time, the hardest time of all.

So now unwind the ties that bind, they only slow you down,
Take away what you can carry, we don't need the same things now,
And please don't think I'm crazy, don't be angry or afraid,
We kept the best of most of all the promises we made.

The years we carry, the times we share are the only things we own
And all I find here of myself are these boot heels in the snow,
There's no wisdom in this ending, we did all we said we would,
Truth is just a tale too plain to be misunderstood.

8. Fleetwood Plain (Quill - SOCAN) Hear It Now!

I stumbled through the hills for the first three days and nights
Following the road, but keeping out of sight
Till the clouds began to gather and the storm, it blew me down
To seek a bed and conversation somewhere in the town.

When they asked me where I came from, I told them Fleetwood Plain
They turned back to the fire and I turned to face the rain
I closed my eyes and thought I saw you waiting with the child
And as the room became much warmer, the night became more wild.

If I could find my way I might make it to the sea
My tracks are washed away and no one can follow me
But for now the road seems harder than the hills from where I came
And a thousand miles mean nothing when I think of Fleetwood Plain.

9. Come To Me (Quill - SOCAN) Hear It Now!
(For Kaya)

Follow the songlines, listen to the wind
Listen for the voice of a faraway friend
Hold to the moonrise, hard to the wire,
I'll sing you home through the stars' cold fire.

Come to me,
Though the way is lost and it's too dark to see,
You shine in every corner of my dreams
And you're just a step away, or so it seems,
Come to me…

We've walked between oceans, we've walked across time,
Follow the startrail and hold to the line,
In the darkness and dust we are never alone,
Each step brings you to me, each step brings you home.

Come to me,
All your pain and heartache I can ease,
I know a place that's cool, a place to breathe,
Slip away between the shadows,
Come to me…

Come to me,
Though the way is lost and it's too dark to see,
You shine in every corner of my dreams
And you're just a step away, or so it seems,
Come to me…

10. The Boys Of Narrabeen (Quill - SOCAN) Hear It Now!
(For Raymond George, Doris and the Narrabeen Crew)

All through the night from every peak and crag
Fires burned as beacons in the storm,
Hours turned on hours and how the hours dragged
And still no hope or comfort come the dawn.

Send her down Huey, Huey send her down!
Give us forty feet of thundering sea!
Let your fury sound, oh, Huey send her down,
And bring home the boys of Narrabeen!

I can see them still with their backs against the waves
Hauling past the breaker line that day,
Five men against the ocean and two small souls to save
At the mercy of the gale and swept away.

Send her down Huey, Huey send her down!
Give us forty feet of thundering sea!
Let your fury sound, oh, Huey send her down,
And bring home the boys of Narrabeen!

Fear can make you humble and fear can make you strong,
Fear had found these men and set them free
Their courage forged in fire, their lives all but forgone
In Tobruk, Kokoda and the Coral Sea.

Send her down Huey, Huey send her down!
Give us forty feet of thundering sea!
Let your fury sound, oh, Huey send her down,
And bring home the boys of Narrabeen!

A sudden rush, a fearful hush, a mighty wall of foam
Rose high against the towering shore
As down the face the small boat raced, heading for home,
Seven pairs of hands upon the oars!

Send her down Huey, Huey send her down!
Give us forty feet of thundering sea!
Let your fury sound, oh, Huey send her down,
And bring home the boys of Narrabeen!

11. Lost In A Moment (Quill/Tolhurst - SOCAN/ASCAP) Hear It Now!

I was lost in a moment, in a great golden river of song
And the music is home to me, carries me safely along
And when I look back everything I was sure of is gone
In the blink of an eye, swept away.

I was lost in a moment when I first saw the love in her eyes
And the mercy she offers is all that I need to survive
I cannot remember the pain and the sorrow and lies
In her long, quiet sigh, swept away.

We are lost in a moment, lost in a worn mystery
Somewhere between who we are and who we're longing to be,
Adrift between landmarks. The journey may still set us free,
Like a dream in the night, swept away.
