TORONTO,
CANADA - July 14, 2003 - On September 16, 2003 True North
Records, one of North America's most highly respected folk
and roots music labels, will release so rudely interrupted,
the critically acclaimed reunion album by Australian roots music
pioneers Greg Quill and Kerryn Tolhurst.
True North Records is home to such Canadian artists as
Bruce Cockburn, Zubot & Dawson, Colin Linden, and Blackie
& the Rodeo Kings. "True North has built its reputation
recording and releasing the work of great songwriters," says
Kerryn. "It's gratifying to be part of the family." Greg adds:
"We're proud to be included in such fine company, and to have
the support of (True North founder) Bernie Finkelstein.
He is one of the true princes of the business, and a fierce
promoter of the music he believes in."
True North also distributes British folk and roots veterans
Richard Thompson, Oysterband and Andy White in
Canada, through Universal Music, as well as albums by
American folk and blues artists Bernard Allison, The North
Mississippi Allstars, and Double Trouble, and Australia's
Paul Kelly.
The Quill + Tolhurst CD, recorded in New York and Toronto, is
the first work from songwriters Quill and Tolhurst since the
mid 70s, when their collaboration yielded the hits "Gypsy
Queen" and "Wintersong" for the seminal folk-rock
band Country Radio, and The Outlaw's Reply,
Quill's groundbreaking solo album. Tolhurst was also a founding
member of The Dingoes, and wrote many of the popular
country rock outfit's enduring hits, including "Way Out West,"
"The Last Place I Ever Wanna Be", and "Going Down Again".
In the1980's Tolhurst's "All Fired Up" (Pat Benatar)
and "Man On Your Mind" (Little River Band) charted
on Billboard's Top 20.
The new Quill/Tolhurst material bears all the trademarks of
their past efforts - mature and lyrical story songs, ringing
guitars, distinctive flourishes of dobro, lap steel, mandolin,
and powerful vocals. Artwork for the CD was created by award-winning
Canadian graphic artist and designer Hugh Syme (Rush,
The Band, The Allman Brothers, Carrie Newcomer, Ian Thomas,
Charlotte Church, Whitesnake, Aerosmith, Bon Jovi).
so rudely interrupted was introduced in March to Australian
audiences at the Port Fairy Folk Festival and The
Brunswick Music Festival in Melbourne, and at concert club
and pub dates in Sydney, Hobart and points in between. It was
the first time the two musicians had performed together in Australia
since 1975.
Quill and Tolhurst also performed live on ABC National Radio
in Hobart and Melbourne, and were the subjects of several press
features and radio interviews across the country.
Since its Australian release in April 2003 via MGM Distribution,
so rudely interrupted has been listed in the Top 40 of
Australia's Rhythms magazine, the national roots
music bible.
What The Critics Are Saying:
"If
you missed the gigs, search out the Quill + Tolhurst album
so rudely interrupted for an exquisite listening experience."
- Ian McFarlane, Rhythms Magazine
"Greg's voice retains its familiar melancholy quality,
the songs sometimes hinting of personal reflection sometimes
plain story-telling. Kerryn sensitively weaves his multi-instrumental
magic around the vocals, one of the most tasteful and
talented musicians Australia has ever produced.
"The test of good songs is when after a few spins you
think you've been listening to them forever, like rediscovered
old friends. That's what this album offers, and a gentle,
relaxed, assured rekindling of an old friendship."
- Ed Nimmervoll, HowlSpace

"Quill makes his living with his pen and his
word composition skills are considerable. As a quality
folk/country re-entry to the world of performing, this
is assured and overdue. As a demonstration of Tolhurst's
grasp of what (and what not) to play, it is exceptional."
- Keith Glass, Country Music Capital News
"The songs have more than a dash of the country and
folk musical form and style to them. They build upon subjects
like relationships, belonging and reflections about the
past, in unique and interesting ways, gently challenging
the listener to ponder further their meaning.
"Quill's and Tolhurst's writing abilities have in no way
suffered despite being so rudely interrupted … a wonderful
collection of songs."
